Seagate rubber covering?

I'm wondering about the black rubber covering on some Seagate drives I've
encountered recently. It seems it's not a good thing. I'm thinking these
drives will overheat. I was thinking of removing the covering but all of
the drive info is written on them, so I didn't. What is the purpose of this
covering and will it hinder heat dissipation?

Doing that will void your warranty too.

Its primarily there to make the drive quieter.

Yes, Seagate obviously put it there to send the drive to it's death prematurely.

I think that thinking is bad for you, so stop that at once.

Whatever it is that Seagate decided it is necessary for.

Not necessarily, it might even help the distribution of heat.

I have a 30-Gig Seagate with a rubber coating. I've used that drive
for the last 2 years or so as sort of an auxiliary drive, playing
movies and some computer games, mostly. It hasn't given me any
trouble, other than it won't boot in my new Athlon XP 2200+ computer.
It still works fine in my old Duron 800 machine.
