I have a Seagate ST380011A 80GB that makes a very annoying ticking
sound when it is idle; it sounds like a clock ticking but when I start
using the computer it stops doing it. The HDD has always done this
since the day I bought it. My friends Seagate 120GB does this also. Any
ideas? Thanks; Amber

Better. Clone off and replace the drives. Both of them. Sounds like you
may be headed for the "click of death" Which is total hard drive
failure. Maybe the real gurus like kony will correct me, But as it
stands now, that's my best bet.

It sounds rather like a background program or service is accessing the
drive when the system is idle -- that is why it stops when you use the
system. Do you have anything like the indexing service running? Any
other background programs that would access the disk to do their jobs?
IIRC there was a freeware program which could tell you which program was
accessing a drive but at the moment the name slips my mind.
