What's the reputation of Seagate hard disks these days? I can pick up
a cheap brand new 1 TB Seagate ST31000333AS. Is it OK?

I've personally had good luck with Seagate, but experiences do seem to
vary.

However, like any drive you must remember that failure is a WHEN not an
IF, so if the $/GB and performance meets your needs then jump on it.

The reviews for that model aren't that good. (Check for comments about
firmware issues, as Seagate had some problems there a while back.)
Seagate has brought out a 7200.12 model, so if you wanted the Seagate
brand, you could try that instead.

If I sort the Newegg hard drives by "best rating", this is what
pops up. There are still DOA entries in the reviews, but the complaints
don't have quite the same tone to them.

Make it a condition of purchase that the firmware is "SD1A" or later.
Otherwise as reliable/fast as any other brand for the same money.

Best
Paul.

Or just upgrade it yourself and in the event of failure, report the
drive DOA and have your retailer swap it out.
