Are these any good, cheapest drive here.

Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 Plus 120GB
7200RPM IDE ATA100 Hard Disk Drive
8MB cache 8.5ms seek time

Thanks

Are these any good,

Pretty decent. They get a bit too warm for my taste, and
you cant set them in quiet as opposed to high performance
mode, but other than that, they're pretty decent.

But the only other option here is the Western Digital WD1200JB 120GB 3 Year
model..

Is it worth the extra..

Have been bitten with 4 IBM Drives and one Seagate, but the Seagate was badly
shipped to me, just place into a Jiffy bag..

Doesnt prove much. They've obviously got a decent amount of airflow
over the drives. You see the difference when you dont have that.

Well my Case has a 120mm fan in front of the current drives.

If it does not support SMART

It does support SMART, just doesnt have
the optional SMART temperature sensor.
then its out of the race, plus Storage
review gave it a bad noise rating..

The Barracuda IVs are certainly quieter, but the
7200.7 has the AAM disabled and they are noticeably
more noisy than the IVs with AAM enabled.
Also its a OLD model, reviewed in Jan 2002.

Who cares ? What matters is how it performs.

And WD has a tendency to improve the design over
time without changing the basic WD1200JB type model
number. Usually by changing the number of platters used
which can give a noticeable improvement in speed.
About 13%

Sounds like you would be happier with the 7200.7
Its a very decent drive as long as its used in a situation
where there is a decent airflow over the drive and you
dont need the quietest drive around. The lack of AAM
is the main downside with that particular drive.

In that case you would likely be very happy with the 7200.7
as long as you dont want the quietest drive possible. The
main downside is the lack of AAM. Seagate disabled that
when they decided that it was a patent infringement.

So how come Storage review gives it a very low noise rating..?

Plus I have tuned off the AAM in my Current Seagate drives, and the seek
noise is just heard above the fan noise..

Thats the big problem with that sort of noise measurement.

It doesnt really correspond with that the user hears.

Technically the seek noises dont produce a very
high sound pressure level, but can be quite irritating
to listen to, partly because they arent constant.
Plus I have tuned off the AAM in my Current Seagate drives,

Yes, but you cant do that with the 7200.7 Seagate decided that they
were infringing a patent on that and took the easy way out and just
disabled it on the latest drives. Stupid decision in my opinion.
and the seek noise is just heard above the fan noise..

Yeah, but the 7200.7 is significantly worse than those.

There have been a few comments in here
about it being irritatingly more noisy.
