Hey all,

I just received a spam e-mail from Tigerdirect about a Seagate 200 GB hard
drive for $99. I don't know much about Seagate - is it a decent make? Also
is Tigerdirect a decent company to deal with? I've been looking for a 200
GB hard drive for a little while now and this is about the best deal I've
seen. Here's the product page:

Sweet deal. I'd say go for it. It's got an 8mb buffer too, which is cool.
It's the best deal I've seen. Tiger Direct is ok, in that they're a big
corporate company, so you don't need to worry about getting ripped off or
used equipment or any of the sorts.

Only thing to consider though is if you've got an semi-old motherboard
without ATA133 support, you wont be able to use any space above 137gb
without a controller card.

Very few people have absolutely no life and can sit back and read the
newsgroups, thread by thread, in their entirety, all day long.

Not there.

Not there.

That's due to the way usenet works. It's been that way "forever".
Unless you're reading news on the same news server, threads won't show
up in the same order. If your reader sorts the messages by threads,
then even the same server and newsreader won't get the threads to show
up in the same order (because the sorting would depend on what
articles each reader had already read).

I'm sure all of this is still in the FAQ's about usenet.

Jeff (usenet reader since 1988, and no that's not a typo).

Mine's sorted by date of initial post (or, barring that, the post
closest to the initial post chronologically) in the thread.

I've only had one seagate die on me, and it was a slow death, so no data
loss (the seagate disk checking tools found the problems before the disk
died, but I only run these once a year, so I got lucky). However,
Seagate now only does 1 year warranty on most drives, and I *think*
Western Digital still do three year warranties. If I'm recalling
correctly, this may be a point to consider. I like the quietness of my
40 and 80 GB Seagate drives.

Seagate is ok but watch out when dealing with Tigerdirect, if you want that
drive go somewhere else on-line and get it.

So, what's the problem with TigerDirect? I just bought everything to
build my computer from them. It and everything it is running great. Then
again, I didn't buy it online. (I have in the past though - without
problems.) I bought everything at their store in Naperville, IL.

If you bought on-line you probably would have experienced very bad customer
service.

They tend not to answer email's and make you jump thru hoops for an RMA.

Comparing prices, they are also fairly steep.

Many better on-line stores available.

Never dealt with them in an actual store, they may be pretty good there.

If you are satisfied, that's all that counts. :)

I wouldn't buy from them in your case purely based on the fact that they
spammed you.

They only thing I ever got from them online did need to be returned. I
bought a PIE scanner from them once that came broken. TigerDirect took
it back without any trouble and sent another one. I have serious
problems with PIE's scanners, but none with TigerDirect.

BTW, the prices I got in the store were very compatible with what I saw
on PriceWatch and Froogle. Plus I didn't pay shipping.

You're right, that's just my experience.
