Well my OP was 15/1/09 lots of advice given, briefly motherboard ECS K7S5A
(Rev 3.X) I went to Crucial site and used their tool to check system and
give upgrade to DDR. I purchased some 184 PC 2100 from Novatech it was
Samsung. Had to return PC would not boot from DDR slots on board. You
advised that I get some working used Crucial DDR, I did and still get
nothing no beeps screen wont come on. the only thing happening is PC runs
through all my DVD, CD, CDR with their front lights coming on as though
system is searching for a disc etc. I took out Modules and replaced with
normal SDRAM 133 but this time when booting up I lost CMOS and had to reset
time etc, but everything works normal. Why will it not read DDR in their two
slots.

PS I still run XP Pro sp2

If there is no obvious 'switch' in BIOS, I would suggest that the slots are
pooped.. :-)

A good idea to check the manual
some of those mobos had jumpers that needed to be changed when going from
one type of RAM
to another

Also true..

Here is the Manual, I cannot see ref to changing anything for the memory,
maybe you can !

Roger

Well I saw no jumpers or reference to them
so there should have been nothing special to do

Assuming that your DDR memory is ok, consider that the memory slots on your
motherboard are pooped..

Go to page #24 of the manual.
There you will see a list of BIOS options.
Near the bottom of the list is one named: SDR/DDR CAS Latency SPD

It is possible that your motherboard BIOS did not automatically set the
"SPD"
properly and you may need to set these values in the BIOS to match the
values
that are specified by Crucial.

Also on page #25 there is a "Auto Detect DIMM/PCI Clk" setting.
See what the BIOS options are for the setting.
My guess is that the default value is set to "Auto".

Checked with Crucial CAS is 2.5 for PC2100 DDR. Been into bios and it shows
Cas SPD, RAS Active time 6T. RAS Precharge time 4T. I am on Auto
Detect. CPU speed 100/100 MHz Dram frequency 100MHZ, that is at the
moment using SDRAM 133MHz.
Any of these readings of use ?

Roger

The specs for your memory should be similar to:
CAS = 2.5
RAS CAS = 3
RAS precharge 3
Cycle = 7

Or sometimes listed as: 2.5-3-3-7

Now in the BIOS what you see should be the same
values or sometimes lower numbers (Example: 2.5-2-2-5)

If the values are too low as my example above shows,
the ram "may" not function properly.

So you have the option of changing the BIOS
From: Autodetect
To: Manual

Once you change to "Manual" you can usually set the values
to match the specs of your ram.

By the way, what is the Crucial part # for the memory you
purchased?

They don't produce PC2100 now, so they use PC2700. My Max states 266MHz. The
part no for PC2100 is CT3264Z265.8TG 2x 256mb

If I alter these settings by turning off Auto, would I then turn off, change
to DDR, then try and reboot. But if it does not reboot what procedure should
I follow to use the SDRAM back in again. As the setting would have been
altered will it not boot up with the old ram back in. I don't wont to get
stuck without the PC.
The cas at moment only shows SPD no number. And I think there is no
reference to Cycle= You can see basic layout in Manual

You may always "Clear CMOS" to reset everything to default entries. (you
may want to make notes about current settings.

Turn off the PC, remove your old memory.
insert the DDR memory, remember to check
that the latches are set into both ends of the
DDR ram.

Power up and immediately enter the CMOS/BIOS.
Change from "Auto" to "Manual" and set the values
to those on the spec sheet that came with the ram.

If you don't have this data then try:
3-3-3-7

Then "Save and Exit" from the BIOS and see if the
PC boots.

Am aware of this.

Did not have spec with Ram I asked them today, and they said Cas was 2.5,
but said have I got the latest bios update, I don't think I have, but did
not really want to go down that road, incase it went wrong. Don't forget
when I boot with DDR I get no screen or beeps, only the lights flashing
through on the DVD, CD, decks.

Sorry, fresh out of ideas :-(
Thank you JS for the help quoted, I will keep it to refer to
