SD memory cards not working

Dear experts,

I have a T61 laptop with WinXP SP2.

The problem is that the SD slot does not work with some SD flash memory cards.
Cards of 16 or 32 MB work fine (so I assume that the slot and divers are ok) -
but 512 MB card gives error 10 in device manager.
A1 GB Sandisk micro SD card (in SD adapter) is not even detected.

Is there a limit of card size for WinXP SD driver?

All tested cards are formatted and working well with a SD to USB adapter.

Regards,

The limit is not with XP...probably a hardware limitation of your laptop...
you may find the easiest solution is just to buy and external (USB)
cardreader

There is a possible hardware limit on the SD slot.

Thanks for all replies.
If I understand correctly, the SD adapter of this machine is not just an
internally connected USB reader, as in older models.
It is directly connected to PCI and capable to run SDIO devices.
So I hoped that it can work with new SD cards of 2 GB or more.

I've sent this question to Lenovo support, still waiting.
By the way, USB readers also seem to have some capacity limit...

Ok I"ve just received reply from Lenovo. It says, "you are outside of
the 30 days support period, now go and buy payed support".
And they have no support forums any longer. Grrrr (x_x)

I have just run into the same problem but I can probably confirm that it is
not the hardware. I have an R61 running Vista Bus who's SD card reader works
fine on a 512Mb card and an X61 also running Vista Bus that also works. When
I stick the same card into an R61 running XP pro - no go. I get the boing to
say that the card has been inserted but it doesn't appear as a drive.

So, the problem would seem to be XP's drivers rather than the hardware. Of
coursa, XP says it is using the latest driver. So, perhaps, Lenovo have an XP
version?

Stuffing the card into an external USB reader works perfectly well. What is
the point of having a built in reader that doesn't work?

This still is a hardware problem since you have tested with three
different SD readers.

Have you checked the "Disk Management" to see if the SD reader show up
there> Within Disk Management, you should be able to assign a drive
letter to the SD readers.

Thanks for sharing, Kenn.
The flash drivers for T61 are not developed by Lenovo.
They are from Ricoh (I guess). I got the latest from Lenovo site.

Yes I found a driver at Lenovo by searching for "SD Card Driver XP R61" and
found it to be a Richoh 4 in 1 driver.

Worked a treat on my 512Mb SD card.

Only once my 512 mb card worked. I can't remember how it happened,
and can't reproduce it again.
Every time I insert this card, it appears with code 10 in dev. manager.

This card works well in a USB reader so I can live wih this , but
hoped to use also the new HC cards...
