sd card crashing vista entirely

Hello. I installed windows vista home premium on my Dell Inspiron 9200 which
has a built in SD card reader.

Since Home Premium upgrade wouldn't let me do a clean install, I install
windows 2000 first and then installed.

When I insert an SD card (I've tried several brands and speeds) vista
completely freezes within a few seconds of inserting the card. It may pop up
the box asking whether I want to use it as readyboost or as a drive, but
regardless of what I choose it just freezes up. No error, no event log
message. The only thing I can do is hold down the power button until the
machine shuts down.

I searched the net and found the vista SD hotfix rollup and installed that
but nothing changed.

At the very least I want it to show me an error message... It seems absurd
that simply inserting an SD card can take down the entire machine.

Please help.

randall,

I can only suggest that you check whether the driver for the card reader is
Vista compatible. Check at the Dell website or at the website of the
manufacturer of the card reader.

Also, in Device Manager, check the Properties of the card reader for any
error messages. In addition, check the Driver tab in that same area where
you can click on a button to have Windows look for an updated driver.

Let us know what happens,

Freddy,

The driver Dell provides is a Microsoft SecureDigital driver. I didn't
explicitly install it before upgrading to Vista.

The device manager doesn't indicate that there are any problems with
anything.

I've just posted some messages here about finding a MSKB article with a
hotfix download for some VISTA problems with SD cards.

Try a search on [Card Reader won't read 2Gb SD card] and you should
find a recent one.

randall,

You didn't say, but if the Dell driver is intended for use with Vista,
install it. The Dell site should indicate whether it's for Vista. I have no
way of knowing.

randall,

Take a look at the post (just above) titled "Problems Connecting USB
Devices..." for a possible solution. The post by Don talks about a file
called INFCACHE.1, which could be corrupted and needs to be deleted. I have
no idea whether doing that would help you, but it's worth considering. You
can google to get more complete information about that file. Just a thought.

Thanks but I already tried that hotfix and it makes no difference at all.
