SCSI support?

I am thinking of upgrading from a aging Compaq Deskpro
to a new PC desktop for home use. I use the PC for a lot
of Photoshop work and I have a Canon slide scanner attached
that is a SCSI device.

My question is do the new PCs support SCSI controllers?

I look at the specs for the PCs and none of them seem to mention
SCSI support. Is SCSI still supported in PCs?

Thanks in advance for any help/advice, I really don't want to have to
buy a new slide scanner, all the new ones are USB.

Just a matter of buying a contoller card. Few motherboards, except those
aimed at servers, have scsi built in. Any of the Adaptec low end PCI ones
should work.

Problem is, buying an Adaptec SCSI controller with an external interface can
cost $150 to $250. With the money you used to buy the controller you could
have bought a USB scanner. You may be able to get a cheap SCSI controller
off eBay.

If the SCSI port on the Compaq is on a card it might be a PCI card. If so
then it's a simple matter to remove it and use it in the new machine.

Yes, thanks! I've got the SCSI card in the existing system now,
I just wasn't sure it would be able to plug into a buss on the new
system. I'm also at W2K so I know I have drivers for it.

Thanks to all who replied!

That's b.s. Adaptec 2940 series cards are available as cheap as $13.00 plus
shipping. Check out www.pricewatch.com

Shame you never chirped in your valuable piece of information to the OP,
troll.

@drian.

First of all, I highly resent being called a troll, as I rarely post, unless I
feel I have something useful to say. Secondly, did it ever occur to you that
perhaps I did not see the original post until I saw yours, and as such was
responding to both the OP and you?

SCSI is not used in home PC's anymore because of its relatively high cost
for components. USB is cheaper. But, yes, you can buy a SCSI card and
install it in an empty PCI slot and use it.

The adaptec 2920 and 2940 series are still available inexpensively, as are
those from Tekram and others based on the Symbios chipset. $20 to $30 range
for just a plain jane SCSI with HD50 jack out the back, and no UW320, RAID
or other high dollar extras not needed to run a scanner. Also he mentioned
a slide scanner, and most of those are much more expensive than a consumer
scanner with "slide" adapter. The quality out of a dedicated slide scanner
will not be matched by a cheap USB scanner. There is a difference you can
really see.

Don't get the wrong idea, I don't usually call people a troll, preferring to
ignore them. But to come in and brand the advice I gave (which I'll freely
admit was over the top, solution wise, but still valid) as "b.s." is in my
view one of the attributes of a "troll".

Yes, it's certainly possible, but no-one really knows that but you. Still,
it's just as easy to go up the thread and post your answer to the OP as I
imagine it was to brand my advice "b.s." and post your answer to the
problem, indirectly, to the OP.

Regardless, your advice would have been the best option. I say "would" as
it appears the OP has retrieved the PCI (?) card from his old Compaq and his
scanner is working. To be quite honest, I didn't realize 2940's are so
cheap.
