I have been running W2K (SBS) for about three years with
no problems. I just donwloaded and installed SP4.
Now, the computer crashes with the error:Address EF820759
base @ EF820000 DateStamp 3591cc03 pel1600.sys.
driver_irql_not_less_or_equal.
So, I have renamed pe1600.sys as pe1600.bak System runs-
but I have no CD Writer, no Scanner, and no DVD..
I tried changing the date of the file (from 1998 to 2003)
to no avail. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

1. It is (and was) listed on the HCL.
2. The driver is pel1600.sys.
3. the inf is oem1.inf. States that it is a PE Logic
1600, SCSI Miniport driver.
4. The system was totally oeprational until the
application of service pack 4.

thanks for the prompt repsonse.

Dear Roy,

Thank you for your posting.

In regards to the pel1600.sys file, it is for the PEL-1600, ASPI Manager
for the SCSI interface/host adapter. This may involve running an
installation routine with the software that came with the SCSI adapter.
Please check the config.nt file for more information. PEL-1600 needs the
line

DEVICE=C:\PEL\PEL1600.SYS

Please disable the line and check the c:\pel folder.

This is likely related to the real-mode driver.

1. Would not that only disable my SCSI (which I need)?
2. I have tried REPEATEDLY to uninstall Service Pack 4.
It goes through the motions, but leaves the files. How
can I return to SP1? (the last good operation, which was
what I had prior to this most recent update)? I cannot
install SP1, since it recognizes that SP4 is present, even
though it has been "officially" uninstalled.

Thanks.

you can boot from the CD and do a "refresh" install over the old location.
It will remove the old winnt\system32 (or windows\system32) folder and get
you back to a point where you are running 2K sp1 (if that is what your CD
has). Then you can apply SP3 and be happy again.

Dear Roy,

Thank you for your reply.

You can check the Service Pack uninstall folder
C:\WINNT\$NtServicePackUninstall$\spuninst\spuninst.exe to begin the
process to uninstall again.

Hope it helps.

Thanks and have a good day!

I don't see how a DOS driver loaded from config.nt could even run.

The OP shows a BSOD listing pel1600.sys, so this is an NT driver.
