Hello all,

I have just installed a Fujitsu scsi drive and controller card on my
XP home machine. Until now I have been sending the machine to sleep if
I am not going to use it for a few hours or if I go to work.

Do people recommend leaving scsi drives on 24/7, or do you just power
them down as per normal drives? (Right now, there is a jumper on the
drive that won't let the OS turn it off - its on when the power supply
is turned on. I can change this though).

Thanks for any tips!

As with any hard drives, it is subject to debate. SCSI hard drives
are more expensive but still operate the same. Some consider that
power down / up sequence can damage a drive so as much as possible,
limit this "ware and tear!" Then, there is the fact that power is
still being used and "wasted" when no one is using this PC.

It is all about the balance between performance, reliability, and energy
savings. I tend to leave my computer in the always on state when I have it
turned on but shut it down at the end of the day. Electic costs are very
high where I live and with more than a few computers in the house the
savings add up..
