Hi folks. Perhaps you can help...I was running W2K on a
Seagate ST19101W that used to be plugged into an old P2B4
SCSI-ready mobo. P2B4 died so am attempting to rebuild
with MSI 845 Ultra and Adaptec AHA-2940UW card. Problem is
I can't get it to boot. Tried the card in different PCI
slots, changed termination jumper settings on the
drive,...nothing. I get a blue screen with the 0x7B
error, "innaccesible boot device". When I boot with a
W98SE floppy, it says the C drive is not partitioned. Am I
missing something? It was running fine before the change.

Frantic!

You have to format the drive to the 2940UW card. I think
thats the only way you will get it to work.

bad advice...

Do a w2k refresh installation (or repair installation). this will refresh
all your operating system files, and drivers to the versions that are on the
CD. You will then need to update your drivers, and possibly re-install some
applications. Test them to make sure they all work.

Then you are done.

when the setup starts from the CD, Press F6 and when prompted, provide the
drivers for that controller via floppy disk.

Well that's what i did yesterday.
I've downloaded the right drivers from the adaptec
website put them on a floppy and booted from cd, pressed
F6 and fed 'him' the floppy.
But with the same result after the reboot it crashes.
Also with the floppy based installation it went wrong.
Afterwards i've did a lowlevel format of the scsi drives
and started the installation again but also no result.

Some info:
IBM PC Server 315
Pentium Pro 200 Mhz
256 Mb
Firmware aha-2940uw : 2.20.0
1x 2 Gb SCSI disk
1x 4.5 Gb SCSI disk
Translation for disks > 1024Mb : on

Windows NT 4 runs like clockwork.

Are you trying to install w2k with an embedded SP already in the
installation? I have heard stories about this kind of thing with SP3
'slipstreadmed' cd's..

have you done the CTRL +A to get into the config on the controller? did you
set the boot device ID to be that of the appropriate drive?

Is the 315 on the HCL for windows 2000? I cant find it listed as being able
to run 2000.

That could be the problem right there...

its still a good box.. run linux on it to get a few more years of service
from it.
