Scrolling appears as jerking motion

Hello. I have never tried this before. I hope someone might be able and
willing to help me with a problem. I'm not sure if this is even the right
place to ask this.

Recently, I had major computer problems, and had to reformat my hard drive.
I am using Windows XP Home Edition on a Compaq 2580 Laptop computer. After
reformatting, getting all the Windows updates and reinstalling various
applications, I have noticed that when I use the scrolling bars, or the
scroll wheel on my mouse, the scrolling goes along jerkily. (This is hard to
describe.) It appears that the pane moves in waves, as if it was water,
rather than just moving along at a smooth and continuous pace, as is normal.
It moves in fits and starts.

Does anyone know what causes this, and more importantly, how I can fix it?

Thanks for any help offered.

After you install an operating system, you must then install drivers for
all your hardware. This means the motherboard (chipset), video (which
is why you have the issue), audio, network, etc. Go to Compaq's website
for your specific model machine and download any drivers and laptop
software.
