script debugging won't turn off

I'm using IE6 and XP SP2.

I have "Disable Script Debugging" checked.

I have "Display a notification about every script error" unchecked.

I've tried it with varying combinations of those two abled and
disabled.

Nothing works.

If anyone knows how to solve this problem, I would be most
appreciative.

Thanks!!

I should add, that the boxes do stay checked or unchecked, as I leave
them. Other posters with the problem had their boxes unchecking
themselves all on their own.

This happens even when I turn off my antivirus and spyware protection
programs.

Also, some of the earlier threads have links that are dead, so I'm
posting the question again.

Thanks!

Thanks for your comprehensive reply, NAS.

My java is up to date, and since this doesn't happen in Firefox, I'm
assuming it's my IE6 that is screwed up, not my anti-virus. Correct?

The system file checker didn't help.

I think I'll install ie7, and then if i don't like it, change back to
6, which should install ie6 in a properly-working mode, correct?
