Screenshots

If you are talking about "Print Screen" key on the keyboard, the answer is
"No, they are not saved". They are in the clipboard and you need to paste
the contents to the graphics program like MSPaint.exe

Depends on what you are using..

Snipping Tool lets you select a folder..
Gadwin Printscreen lets you set a folder...
PrtScrn only holds the snapshot in the clipboard, you have to open an image
editor program (like Paint or Irfanview) and paste the image, and save it to
a file.

If you are simply using the 'prtscn' key (or alt-prtscn) then the
screenshots are transferred to the Windows clipboard. They can't be saved
from the clipboard, instead you need to open the Windows Paint application
(start>all programs>accessories>paint) and paste your screenshot into paint.
You can then save the screenshot.

If you are using the Windows Vista Snipping tool then this will give you a
better option for saving the screenshots.

Personally I use Techsmith's Snagit to capture screenshots. This gives me
far better control over what I capture and also allows me to edit and save
the relevant screenshot. Sadly they don't do a free version of this
application, you have to pay for it.

Paint isn't necessary, it's just "there" and available. You can paste
it into any graphics application that you are familiar with... and
even into MS Word if you like.

Heck, you can even past it directly into the composition window of
your email client as long as it's setup to compose in HTML.

Paul, if you are planning on 'editing' the screenshot to any degree you need
to paste it into Paint, or Photoshop - I prefer Photoshop. Pasting into a
photo editing application also gives you the option of saving in 'bmp, jpg,
png' etc. You can only save the screenshot as part of the document if you
decide to save it in Word. Pasting directly to an email is fine but you
haven't got a lot of control over file size.

As I pointed out in my original post I use Snagit. This enables me to
capture screenshots (even scrolling windows) and with its built in editing
window I quickly allows me to re-size, add comments, highlight areas etc.

can you capture the *mouse cursor* over a opened menu ?

Thanks John, but I know that - and Photoshop is also my preferred
editor. I also use Paint Shop Pro now and then if I don't want to do
anything really fancy :-)

I only added my reply so that some newb wouldn't think that Paint is
the only option.

Stheif,

The answer to your question is 'Yes'. You would use the 'menu with time
delay option.' This will capture the drop down menu and the position of your
cursor arrow.

I understand that, Paul. It is a valid point and well worth pointing out.
