I have a good freeware program that does pictures with various effects. Is
there a freeware screensaver program that includes the use of sprites? I've
looked at SOS and pricelessware and don't see one listed.

The really only freeware screensaver maker out there is SaverWiz which
hasn't been updated in a while. It is a great slideshow screensaver
maker but doesn't support sound files or things like Sprites. Unless
someone out there knows differently, I don't believe this situation
has changed. We're basically stuck with SaverWiz.

One thing about it, I have demo'ed many scr makers out there that are
shareware, and they don't have as nice effects as SaverWiz nor do they
do such an easy job of making SCRs. Too many sharewares out there
make only EXE files, something I can't stand.

Perhaps one day they'll fix it to do other stuff, but for now, I don't
know of any other program that is freeware that does what you need.

Hopefully someone knows of something that does.

Somewhere in my wanderings I picked up a little freeware program called
"Sounds with Screensaver." It allows you to run any screensaver with music
or sounds. I don't remember where I got it, nor is there any contact info in
the screensaver setup screen itself. I will gladly emain the zip file to
anyone who wants it though.

Yours only makes EXEs, in case this is an issue for others, is it is
with me. I do not like EXE screensavers but always prefer a
standalone SCR file. Thanks for the tip, though; much appreciated!

Can't you just change the extension from .exe to .scr? After all
they're both executables. Or is the .exe extension because the file
generated is an installation file?

Thanks for your suggestions. I may need to buy what I want. This is the
program I am currently using, downloaded from son of spyware, and it seems
to have more features then other freeware screensavers I've seen.

2Flyer Screensaver Builder is a Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP tool which lets
you make your own screensavers. Collects up to 1000 JPG/JPEG, GIF, BMP or
WMF, EMF images and 2flyer will merge them into a Screensaver Adds MP3, WAV
or MID sound and music files to your screensavers to be played while the
images are displayed Displays images with 240 transition effects - as many
as you can imagine Creates a single .exe screen saver installation file -
email and share the screensaver with your friends at any time.

No, because, as you say, it generates not an installation file but a
resource file. When you go into the Windows System or System32 file
you'll see a folder with the components of a screensaver all in little
bits and pieces. Sometimes, too, if you try to just move the folder,
i.e., by copying it onto a floppy to install onto another computer
(like a colleagues) then the screensaver doesn't work because of
instructions on paths, etc. There isn't always an INI file to edit.

Well, it's bad enough sharing with colleagues who don't know how to do
much on computers and to walk them through where to install never mind
trying to get them to edit a DAT or INI file so it works. All around,
for backup purposes, etc., much easier to deal with a simple SCR file,
something that scr software makers don't realize half the time. Sure,
understandable, a source EXE file is easiest for real newbies to deal
with, but much easier just to have an SCR file that one has made into
an EXE if that's the case. Once the EXE is gone, the user can still
just learn to go nab an SCR to backup, etc.

Have you looked at XATSHOW. The basic program is freeware and is quite
impressive. It will produce slide shows as .exe files and also screen
savers.

P.S. I seem to remember that you could change any suitable .exe file to a
screensaver simply by changing the filetype to .scr --- I've not tried this
but no doubt one of our experts will be able to comment.

Frank, I'm no expert but sometimes the reason they're .exe files is
because what's produced is a self extracting executable. The .scr file
is usually put in the c:\windows\system folder (or whatever your
version of Windows calls it) and any image or sound files are put in a
separate subfolder. Changing the extension to .scr wouldn't work for
obvious reasons.

I think he may be referring to programs generally, not EXE files for
self-installing screen savers, i.e. you could turn notepad into a
screensaver by renaming it notepad.scr.
I'm not sure if that is true or not (that any executable file can be renamed
and turned into a screensaver) but there are screensaver programs that will
let you use any program as a screensaver. For example, Active Screensaver
will do this. So, if you had a photo slideshow program (NOT a photo
screensaver) you could convert it to a screensaver using Active Screensaver.
I don't know though whether the program would close automatically upon
keyboard or mouse input. I have dl'd Active Screensaver, but I have never
played around with it.
