Can't you just change the extension from .exe to .scr? After all
they're both executables. Or is the .exe extension because the file
generated is an installation file?
No, because, as you say, it generates not an installation file but a
resource file. When you go into the Windows System or System32 file
you'll see a folder with the components of a screensaver all in little
bits and pieces. Sometimes, too, if you try to just move the folder,
i.e., by copying it onto a floppy to install onto another computer
(like a colleagues) then the screensaver doesn't work because of
instructions on paths, etc. There isn't always an INI file to edit.
Well, it's bad enough sharing with colleagues who don't know how to do
much on computers and to walk them through where to install never mind
trying to get them to edit a DAT or INI file so it works. All around,
for backup purposes, etc., much easier to deal with a simple SCR file,
something that scr software makers don't realize half the time. Sure,
understandable, a source EXE file is easiest for real newbies to deal
with, but much easier just to have an SCR file that one has made into
an EXE if that's the case. Once the EXE is gone, the user can still
just learn to go nab an SCR to backup, etc.
