I've just received a new laptop with Windows XP having
previously used Win'98. How can I switch off the
incredibly annoying feature whereby every time I hover
over an item a text box with useless information pops up?

Thanks

Harold

start\run and type in regedit and hit ok. Now navigate
through the followin keys to the end by clicking the +
beside each one.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
\Explorer\Advanced now left click on advanced to open it's
sub keys in the right panel and find ShowInfoTip and right
click on it and then click modify and type in
0 .0=disable, 1=enable. Do the same for EnableBaloonTips
while you are at it. Like me you probably hate all that
useless info tips and bubbles. FolderContentsInfoTip is
another one I turn off. If you want to turn off the auto
complete and the history under run and stuff like that
then while here scroll down under the open Explorer and
you will see RunMRU. Right click on this and then click
permissions and set everyone to deny. OR if it's just you
then set the permission under your name only to deny and
then other people can still use the annoying stuff. If you
need more help like this you can e:mail me at any time.
You can even rename your open IE6 window to whatever you
want instead of Windows Internet Explorer. Good luck.

.
There may be a slightly easier way. Try going into
windows explorer, then clicking on tools > folder options,
then once there, click the view tab, and there should be
an option that says Show pop-up description for folder and
desktop items. Make sure that box is "unchecked," and
hopefully that will help.

Hope that helps : )
