Screen shots won't print

I've just purchased an HP Pavillion with XPSP2
preinstalled, and I've found that I can't take a screen
shot. I use either "print screen" or alt+print screen,
but when I try to paste this to a Word document (like I
could with Windows ME) all I get is the photo brackets; no
actual picture of the screen shot. Can anyone help me with
this?

I haven't seen the issue with screen shots...but
maybe these articles will offer some ideas:
