Screen Saver Won't Activate

I just got a new machine and after I loaded my software
(office, plus!, Norton, etc) the screen saver stopped
working. It will not come on automatically if the wait
time is set for anything other than 1 minute.

Dell suggested that I reinstall the OS - which, given the
time required, I am unwilling to do for such a small
problem. I did run a repair installation, uninstalled
several programs, and did a selective startup to see if I
could identify a background program that was causing the
problem. Nothing worked.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Format and reinstall xp--you have too many problems probably associated with
spyware/virus type stuff
