Screen saver lockout / grace period before PW is required

When you configure a screen saver to lock a machine after some
inactivity period, it seems that there is a brief grace period after
the screen saver kicks in but before the machine is actually locked.
In other words, if you're watching your machine and the screen saver
activates, if you move your mouse right away, the screen saver goes
off and you can get back to work without having to give it your
password again.

Does anyone know HOW LONG this grace period is?

It is a normal behavior that the password protection takes effect several
seconds later after the screensaver shows up.
