Hi, I have a pc with Windows 2000 pro on it. The screen saver is set to kick
in at 10 minutes and the password protect on it is gray out, but checked.
When I try to change the amount of time, it doesn't change it when I go back
to view it. Also, I cannot undo the checked password protect. Thank you. -p

Try here:

ScreenSaverIsSecure
HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Control Panel\Desktop

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windows2000serv/reskit/regentry/93258.mspx?mfr=true

Delete the value altogether, or use the gpedit tool to do the changes in
the Group Policies.

John,
I deleted the value and it worked. I wasn't sure where to do the 'gpedit'.
IN the start-run area?

Also, from the 2nd part of my posting, the screensaver is set at 15minutes.
When I make a change, say to 60 minutes, it referts back to 15 minutes.
Where is the setting for this in the regedit? Thanks. -p

Actually, the setting was at 900 (15 minutes). I tried changing this, but it
did not work. I changed to 3600 (60 minutes), but as soon as I closed the
window and went back in, it reverted to 15 minutes. thanks. -p

Yes, you can start it by clicking Start > Run and entering gpedit.msc
in the Run box.

You will see these policies at:

User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Control Panel\Display

If you are the only user on the computer you can change the settings
there to "Not Configured", you should then be able to adjust things as
you usually do at the Display Properties Screen Saver tab.

John

It didn't work. They were configured "not configured." I also tried to
disable them. Logged off (and rebooted) and it did not work. Not sure what
to do. thanks. -p

The time value is held at the ScreenSaveTimeOut at:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

John

Are there any values remaining at:

HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Control Panel\Desktop

if so can you paste the contents of the key here?
