Screen Saver doesn't work

Guest

Hi there,

I recently bought an external hard drive to back up my original. Ever since
then my screen saver has stopped working.

No matter which screen saver I choose or for whatever length of time until
it kicks in it doesn't do anything.

I don't suppose it matters but I am paranoid that my screen will be damaged
if I don't use one.

Can anyone help?

And so, in order to get the screen saver to work, you
need to uninstall software that you need.

Totally unacceptable.

This problem has existed for years, clear back
into W2K.

Blank your screen manually, with Wizmo.

Don't even use a screen saver. They harken back to the days when your
monitor could be imprinted if a constant image was left on. Unless you
have a twenty year old monitor no worries.

Just set your monitor to stand-by after a set time. Saves energy where a
screen saver uses full power to run.

I have the same problem, with the screen saver not working since I
installed my Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 4000. The
above solutions have not worked for me.

I want to have the screen saver, because I like to display the My
Pictures Slideshow. I love it when my pictures scroll by when I am
not using my computer.

In my case, the screen saver works when I sign in under my guest
account, but it doesn't work when I use my usual account, which is the
computer administrator account.

Does anyone have any ideas why it works under guest, but not in my
main account? Thanks...

Norma what if you manually invoke the screen saver by using preview from the
screen saver tab? Does it start and run? If so that's a work around to see
the slide show.

Yes Rock, it does work that way, but I want it to work autmatically
(like it used to), each time I get up and stop working on my computer,
which can be several times a day. I don't want to have to click on it
each time I leave my desk. My computer is in my living room, so
having my pictures scroll by is pleasant, and gets viewed by everyone
who comes to my home. Everyone enjoys it...

Thanks...

What kind of mouse, wireless optical by any chance? I understand you want
it to work but at least for know there is a workaround to be able to see it.

What kind of mouse, wireless optical by any chance? I understand you want
it toworkbut at least for know there is a workaround to be able to see it.

As stated above, it is a Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse
4000.

I have already tried many things. I installed, unsinstalled and
reinstalled the included software when I first bought the mouse.
Then, I returned the mouse to the store, and bought another one
(Logitech). That didn't change the screensaver problem. So, I
returned the Logitech one, and rebought a MS one, as I liked it
better. I have tried going into msconfig, and disabling all the
startup programs. That didn't help. At one point, one suggestion I
got said to do something (can't remember now what it was), but that
doing that would erase all my restore points, but would bring back my
screensaver. That didn't work. I greatly regret doing that, because
if I had been smart, I could have just restored to an earlier point,
and it would probably have taken care of the problem. Back then, I
wasn't terribly familiar with restore points.

After that, I tried Kelly's tweaks, and that didn't help. I have
tried a few other things too, but can't remember all of them. I do
have Power DVD, do not have the ehtray thing, don't have any other DVD
program such as DVD launcher. My computer is not a Dell. I am fully
protected, updated regularly, and frequently scanned for viruses,
spyware and adware. I do automatic Windows updates. I do have SP2,
of course.

Any suggestions? I am still quite baffled by the fact that it works
under my guest account. Any ideas why it would do that?

Thanks so much for trying to help! :)

Ok, since you've tried the solutions Ramesh proposed to the other poster,
and they didn't work, I don't have anything else to suggest, sorry. It is a
known problem with these mice.

Likely reason is the Guest Account has limited access to the PowerDVD
software. The ultimate fix is to remove it.

I guess I will just have to live with it.

WOW, did it ever, I saw it at the "Rock-Norma" exchange. My humblest
apologies. As a potential remedy, please disconnect the external drive
when not in use and see if the SS starts working. Otherwise is there
some "backup" software that is continuously polling the drive which may
keep the PC awake.
