Screen Resolution Won't Save

I'm trying to change the screen resolution from 800x600 to
1024x768 and this works OK, but after a reboot, it resets
to the old resolution (800x600). I've tried this several
times and it always resets to 800x600. Does anyone know if
there's a default setting somewhere in XP that I need to
change before the resolution change becomes permanent?
I've tried reverting (from nVidia) to the XP display
drivers, but this hasn't helped.
