I recently put a DVD burner in my computer. After recording video to my hard drive I was trying to edit. The program called for the screen to be reconfigured to a higher resolution. I did as I thought I should but when I restarted the computer the intro to Windows XP came on but when it usually transitions to the main screen the monitor shuts down and goes idle. How do I fix this or get the original screen back? ( I am using my wifes computer to send this message)

Re-boot your XP system into SAFE MODE in the following manner:
Restart your computer and as it starts up beginning tapping the F8
function key at the rate of about two-times per second.
Keep tapping this key until you see the start up menu and its numerous
options.
Using the arrow keys on your keyboard, highlight the option that
reads:
SAFE MODE
Once highlighted, hit the ENTER key.
If another menu comes up and asks WHICH operating system you want to
boot, make sure Windows XP is highlighted.
The computer will now boot up in Safe Mode.
If the system asks you if you want to do a Restore or anything like
that, just tell it NO.
When all is done, you will be booted up in Safe Mode (the screen will
look a bit odd to you)
Now, right mouse click on an empty part of the desktop and from the
menu left click on PROPERTIES.
Next click on the Setting Tab.
Half way down this box you wil see a slider that allows you to change
the Screen Resolution. Adjust this slider to the resolution you
desire. Now click on the APPLY button. If you see a box that asks if
you want to keep these settings, click YES.
Now click the OK box if it is still there.
Go to START and re-boot your computer. All should be well again.

Did what you suggested but it didn't work
Really? Hmm. Based on the description you gave of the problem the
instructions I gave should have resolved the problem.
I'm sorry but have no other recommendations at this time.
Perhaps someone else has an idea.
