I own a Dell Inspiron 1000 laptop which came with 256MB of RAM, and I
just bought another 256MB of memory. I followed instructions for
inserting the memory, but when I tried turning my computer on, green
lights came on, the cd drive started up, but the screen was just
black...didn't respond to any keys and it wouldn't do anything else
from there...When i take out the new memory stick it boots up and runs
windows fine. HELP!

Are you sure the new memory is 100% compatible with the old memory? If you
insert ONLY the new memory, what happens when you start the notebook?

This has nothing to do with XP. Take the question to an appropriate
group.

Dell has been known to use proprietary memory chips. Check with them as to
what memory you need.

Find out which motherboard you have fitted, then obtain its manual for also
the spec.
Also some motherboards won't mix the different Ram ie sdram or DDR I can
recommend an helpful company if you are in UK they will tell you what you
need and supply good products www.novatech.co.uk

"Crucial" will tell you what's compatible with your PC. Google for it and
visit their website. Very easy to navigate. Just fill in the blanks.
