Hi,
Really stupid me decided to change the display settings in the control
panel under the advanced tab. My screen isn't a very good one - it was
only on 600x400 pixels and I tried to change it to 800x600 or something
under display-->settings-->advanced as I was unable to alter it using
the sliding bar in settings. It worked slightly but then I changed it
again to something else and when it rebooted I got the Windows startup
screen then when it would usually go to the desktop it just goes black.
I've tried starting up in VGA mode, safe mode and the last good one,
but nothing works. I can use the keyboard to shut it down but cannot
see anything. Please help!
Thanks,
Kathleen

if it was, it must have been older than 15 years old....

If you are sure that you have the monitor pluged in to the correct VGA card
(you might have 2, one onboard and one AGP) and you turn on the monitor and
it does NOT display the first text from the BIOS
when the PC starts then that means that your monitor is dead.

do you hear any beeps of the pc complaining when you start it? Perhaps the
display card is
loose... it has happened to me many times.

The computer starts up and displays the BIOS text. It will go into the
options screen and I am able to choose VGA mode, and it starts up perfectly.
The problem is Windows. I have Windows XP and when starting up the computer
shows the Windows startup screen but after that there is nothing but
black/grey. The computer beeps as normal when starting up.

go into vga mode and try lowering your resolution or removing the display
driver so it will need to find it again and reset itself.

If its a pure windows problem then try system restore

sorry, i wasnt too clear on this in the original post. thanks so much for
trying to help... vga mode does not work. i can select the different modes -
i can tell the computer to start in vga mode, however once i do this i still
have the same problem. the desktop and start bar never appears. i simply have
a blank black screen. i cannot do a system restore as the start bar and menus
do not appear. i cannot see windows itself so i am unable to access any of
its functions.

Ok ...try this:
when you get to the blank screen press ALT CTRL DEL
see if TASK MANAGER pops up. If it does, find all the explorer instances and
terminate the proccesses.
Then go to FILE>New task (run) and type EXPLORER and press enter..

see if the shell starts (taskbar) then try to fix, clean, restore your pc

tell me if this helps

Sorry I took so long to reply, I couldn't find this site or my post for a
while.
I pressed ctrl alt del and I assume the task manager came up but I can't see
it! Using the keyboard I tried to just end all tasks, not sure if it worked,
then attempted (using a laptop as a guide) to use the keyboard to run
explorer. Didn't work. Thanks for all your help so far... any other
suggestions?
thanks so much

I also tried using the laptop to do a system restore (by using the arrow keys
etc) but that didn't work.. another thing I tried was changing the display
settings back using arrow keys but that didn't work either. Is there
something I can download, burn to cd and use on the computer or something
like that? Or are there other options?
thanks
