Screen Images for some texts too faint - why?

I notice sometimes when I view a window containing scanned text that
it is usually so faint that I cannot read the text. Yet when I print
the text and/or the window containing the text, the printed result is
fine and very readable.

I have played a little with contrast and brightness settings both on
the monitor and in Control Panel's 'display', but there is little
improvement.

I am wondering what the cause is of this?

Anyone?

Could be the scanner needs a clean ?.

Nah - I thought as much - so I looked at a few text images I
downloaded from the web. Both .txt's and .pdf's. The latter
especially are faint. It is almost as though I have a setting
somewhere that needs adjusting, but where? The biggest thing to me is
that the printing doesn't match the screen. That is, the screen is
faint but the print-out is just fine.

Really curious about this.

I could just be the difference in resolution. Screen resolution is
generally considered to be about 96 dpi, while most printers can handle
300 dpi -- that makes a lot of difference when you're talking about
small-point fonts.
