Hi
Try this
Start/Run and type SFC /SCANNOW, press the Enter key; when prompted to insert the original XP CD, do so
Watch the screen, you may need to press the retry key several times until the scan is completed
You can also use the extract command to copy the drivers to system 32 folder from the I386 folder of the original XP CD
o
Power on the PC and wait until windows loaded completely
Insert your XP CD into the CD tray. When the setup screen appeared, press exit
Press Start/run and type msconfig, press Enter key
click on Expand file butto
File to Restore: pci.sy
Restore From : X:\I38
Save File To : C:\Windows\system32\driver
Where "X" represents the letter assigned for your CD drive
Press the Expand button, follow the prompt
Afterall, reboot the PC
If the weird thing still happens, try perform a repair installation of XP
Note: just repair, NOT clean install, your data should be safe
However, it is better to backup all the important data files to the 2nd Hdd before the repair take place
How to perform a repair install of XP
Boot from the XP CD, press the Enter key to enter setup
Press F8 key to accept the licence agreement
During the setup, when prompted to press the "R" key to perform a repair installation of XP, do so
Wait and follow the prompt to complete the repair install
After successfully repaired, you need to re-install SP1 or SP1a and update all the critical patches again
Last Resort: Clean install of XP, backup all the data files to the 2nd Hdd first. It may be possible that you cannot get access to the files in the 2nd Hdd after the clean install of XP. See how to take owner ship of files as below

Hope it helps

Yesterday and today I've been having some preblems with my comp. I'll be just doing what im usually doing on it and then the screen goes totally black and nothing response. I'll try to restart and sometimes it wont even get that far and just give me an underscore white line. Another time before that it said that two system files were corrupt one of which being system32\drivers\pci.sys. I tried restarting again though and it was fine for 12 hours but now this morning it happened again. I've run my norton virus check and adaware numerous times and they've picked up nothing. Does someone have any answers to fix this problem
edit: another question: if i format the hardrive that windows is on and then reinstall it onto it, will my second hard drive work right off the bat without needing a reformat?
