screen freezes

Hi,

I am using Word 2000 (on a PC) to write a fairly large document (over 400 pages). Every 20-30 seconds or so, the screen freezes, or stalls, and then the cursor comes back to life again. Curiously, the problem began only after I installed the latest update from the microsoft website, although I cannot be absolutely sure about it. My operating system is Windows XP.
One additional piece of information: I noticed that every time I work on this particular Word document, the CPU hovers around 97-98%.

any suggestions?
