screen freezes

My screen always freezes after one game on an online
gaming site. It doesn't on the other games sites I use.
I have to use the bar at the bottom and hit close and
then a box telling me I have to end the program appears
and then a box asking me to send the error report. I
have run Fix-it and ad-aware and that is not helping.
Can anyone think of anything else I could do?

Hi Frannie,

Since that issue is specific to 1 gaming site, contacting
their support be your best path to find the solution.

Which game site / games are you having this problem with?
Which game site / games are you not having problems with?

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I have tried going to their
support and when I replied to them that I still was
having the problem, they never responsed. It is
Worldwinner. I play at SkillJam and Treasure Games with
no problem. I am thinking I need to reformat although I
will have to learn how, because I am also having trouble
getting Adobe Acrobat Reader to open. I have uninstalled
and reinstalled 3 versions with no success. There have
been other little things that have been coming up. My
whole system is just acting, well, "hinky".

Hi Frannie,

Since there are so many various issues, let's troubleshoot the basics first. :-)

1. To see if it's a software conflict: Temporarily disable Startup
programs one at a time, starting with Firewall, Antivirus, and ad
blockers using: http://new.jtsoft2001.com/windows/startup.php

You can lookup what a program does before you disable it here:
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

2. Run a virus scan at: http://housecall.antivirus.com Afterwards
Download & Run Spybot from: http://security.kolla.de to find any
Trojans, Adware, or Spyware which could clog up your system.

3. Click My Computer / Rightclick the Drive & Choose Properties
/ Run the "Disk Cleanup..." / Next Click the "Tools" Tab and run
the "Error-Checking" and "Defragmentation" utilities.

4. Go to the Windows Update site for everything under Critical and
Recommended: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com Some games
require a patch: http://www.avault.com/pcrl/patches_list.asp?letter=a

5. Update DirectX and your Chipset, Sound, &Video Drivers:

Jimmy,

I am sorry it has taken me so long to reply. I really
appreciate all the information you sent. I followed your
instructions until I got to #5 and then I got lost. It
is too far over my head I think. I could not figure out
what to do even on the first one. Also, when I try to
run spybot, all I get is a small window with a red cross
and the word English. I cannot tell if it is doing
anything or not. I have run Adaware and cleaned out the
files there. There were no viruses when I ran that scan.
Nothing I have done so far has helped. I have been
wondering if I tied the computer to my bumper and drove
around the block once. Do you think that might help?

Hi Frannie,

No! Don't tie your computer to the bumper. That will make things worst. ;-)

Since you've run Ad-Aware, it's comparable to Spybot, so don't worry
about reading the Spybot documentation to learn about their product, instead
since this error is being generated by only one of the gamesites that you play
at, contact them (again) and let them know that you're playing at other sites
while you're waiting for a solution to the problem. That might help prioritize
your issue with them. I hesitate to start repairing your Windows system files
for an issue with just one site, however here's some suggestion in case ...

Online games are usually developed using Flash, Java, or Virtual Machine.
The most likely solution to a problem with an online game is to install, upgrade,
or reinstall the right one for the game site you're playing on.

A. For Zone.com games: Zone.com are converting most of their games for Flash
to avoid the conflicts between the Sun Java system and Microsoft's Virtual Machine.
Install Flash from: http://sdc.shockwave.com/shockwave/download/frameset.fhtml

B. Most other game sites still use Java:
Sun.com will examine your system requirements and install the Java version you
need when you click: http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_automatic.jsp

C. If the online game still won't load, or gives you errors, try these steps:

1. Click START / Control Panel / Internet Options and click on the Advanced Tab.

2. Below HTTP 1.1 is the Sun Java/ Microsoft VM section: Make sure all Java choices
are unchecked (especially JIT) and then press [OK]. You may be prompted to reboot.

3. If you don't see a Microsoft VM section then download Microsoft Virtual Machine for:
Windows 98 / Me / NT / XP from: http://www.abxair.com/software/msjavx86.exe

4. After you download Java, double-click the file to install it, reboot and then follow
the directions in Steps 1. and 2..to disable JIT compiler and other advanced options.

* Whenever you get a Java Virtual Machine Security Update from Windows Update, you
will have to follow Steps 1. and 2..to disable JIT compiler and other adv. options again.

6. If the problem persists Adjust Your browser settings using this basic example:
http://www3.sympatico.ca/nibblesnbits/EnterRooms.html#IE

7. Try these suggestions for Zone's Java Games:
http://classic.zone.msn.com/zzzz/help/helpjavagames.asp

8. Maybe it's a software conflict: Make certain that your Firewall or Antivirus program is
not configured to block Java Applets. Norton's products for example have that option.
If you're unsure temporarily disable Startup programs one at a time, starting with Firewall,
Antivirus & AdBlockers using: http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=331796
or this utility: http://new.jtsoft2001.com/windows/startup.php

9. If you have a Coffee Cup icon in your system tray (next to the time) you might have a
conflict between MS VM and Java: Uninstall Java using Control Panel / Remove Programs.

10. Check the Help / Support section of the game site in question for Java topics relevant to
that site. There is usually an email or a (non Java) help chat available as well. :-)
