I have Windows XP Home. The background in all pages on the Internet and
elsewhere is not white, but a very pale shade of bluish-gray. This is
annoying and also hard on my eyes. I have tried right-clicking on the desktop
and getting into Properties, but to no avail. I have also tried the Windows
Customizing site. Still I get nowhere. Any help?

Dubja,
Right click your Desktop and go to PROPERTIES and then to the APPEARANCE
tab and then on that window click on ADVANCED tab at the bottom, then use
the ITEM drop down menu and select WINDOW and change your background color
there for COLOR 1: .. You can also change the default text color for certain
items there. Click OK when you have made your changes and then click APPLY
and OK the final window.

I'm assuming you are surfing with IE

Goto internet options, Under the "general" tab

click "color" button, put a tick in "use windows colors" and click OK

Click "accessibility" and untick everything in there, click OK click OK

see if that works....

I tried your suggestion, but the Apply button does not highlight itself to
click on it, so I can only click on the Ok buttons, but nothing happens and
when I go back to recheck, the dropdown item is always Desktop and not
Window. So nothing changes.

After diddling around for two days, I finally tried, under Appearances tab,
switching from "Windows classic" which I preferred for less garish blue color
to "Windows XP" look. This solved my problem, as the background on pages is
now white. I can live with the outrageous blue that Windows uses so much by
subduing it with the other controls. Thanks all for you help...
