Actually, I'm 57 and began adjusting TV controls on the
Dumont TV we bought about 1953.
Modern monitors have mostly gone to software controls, some
still have multi-function buttons and a few still have
knobs!!
But sudden changes in screen size and black bars indicate
failures in the flyback transformer, the CRT power supply or
the tube it self. In the old days, there were vacuum tubes
that could also drift and fail, the need for manual controls
went away with the vacuum tube.
