Don't know how it happened, but a black border has
appeared on my computer, shrinking my desktop. How do I
great rid of the border?

What is the current resolution, under Control Panel|DISPLAY|SETTINGS?
If applicable, back it off to 1024 X 768. If already at that setting, try
800 X 600.

The monitor voltage is getting low and not driving the full
screen, could be dirt causing heat build-up, could be age on
the capacitors, could be the CRT is getting old.

Your monitor should have controls on it to size the screen. It varies from
one brand to another but, there should be knobs or buttons on the front,
bottom or side of the monitor to adjust the screen size. Perhaps, one of
them was accidentally bumped, or whatever. Try adjusting them.

I was using my computer a couple days ago when it
flickered and the image was all warped and the screen was
squished horizontally and really dark. Then it flickered
back to normal resolution. Then after a while it
flickered again and stuck. By squished, i mean really
squished, like the width of the screen was about 4 inches
wide, and stretched out really really long up and down. I
clicked the buttons on my monitor to try and shrink it
back to fit, but after a certain point, it would stop and
half of the screen would be below where I could not see
it. I went to display properties and changed the
resolution to 800x600 and it made the screen huge, but it
filled up more space. There are still two black bars on
eithe rside of my screen where I cant extend the screen.
When I start up my computer, the Window's XP screen is
usually black, but not it looks like it has a layer of
white on it, and its off balance(a little over to the
left). I know there is a point on my monitor where there
is absolutely no image, cause itll go from light dark
(where the screen cant stretch far enough), to dark
black, wehre there isnt any light at all(where I know the
image wont ever go to). Before a few days ago, my monitor
was just fine, and i havent done anything to it. My
computer is kinda old, should I get a new monitor or
what? I try to change the resolution higher(I have a 17
inch monitor)but it just goes back to the extremely
squished mode and I cant fix it. Everything is connected
correctly, and my video card has been working fine. I
dunno what to do! right nowi have it on the lowest
resolution, 800by600 and on 32 for color. I only have on
monitor, bu tI noticed on the display settings, it has
two monitors. Should it say that? I dont know what to do!
HELP!!! email me, with "MONITOR HELP!" in the subject

It could be that some of the people, who post here, are so young that they
never had the opportunity to adjust the horizontal and vertical controls on
a T.V. (-:

If the did, they would know about CRT controls!

Actually, I'm 57 and began adjusting TV controls on the
Dumont TV we bought about 1953.

Modern monitors have mostly gone to software controls, some
still have multi-function buttons and a few still have
knobs!!

But sudden changes in screen size and black bars indicate
failures in the flyback transformer, the CRT power supply or
the tube it self. In the old days, there were vacuum tubes
that could also drift and fail, the need for manual controls
went away with the vacuum tube.
