Screen blanks out on laptop

In the past couple of days my laptop screen blacks out without cause. I have not noticed any trend except that it will stay on when a program is running, such as my word processor, or data base program or when on the internet -- but not always. When it starts to misbehave it will blank out almost constantly allowing a couple of seconds with screen on. I have been bringing in the screen by pressing the on/off switch/sensor the laptop has when the laptop is closed. When I do this the screen reappears and may stay on for the duration of the session or go back into black status. I appears that opening a program keeps the screen lit on.

I have tried changing the display controls under the control settings. Any ideas.

Check the settings in "Power Options" in Control Panel (in the Performance &
Maintenance group, if you use the "common tasks" view of Control Panel.) It
sounds like your laptop is going on standby. A laptop will typically have
two different power option configurations: one when plugged in and one when
running on battery.
