Scratch disk

How do I increase my scratch disk to include my open
drive space? With some large photo files I can't open
them after editing them due to insufficient scratch disk
space. I've gone to the limits of RAM and the secondary
cache on my hard drive doesn't seem to work. Any tricks
or am I missing something obvious? Any suggestions
appreciated.
