Scheduling Computer Wake-Up

I want a brand new Windows XP Media Center computer to be on 24-7, except I
don't need it at night. I can see how to automatically schedule the
SHUTDOWN.EXE task, but I don't see a corresponding file to wake-up the
computer before I wake up. I would expect that I would defragment the disk
as a part of the wakeup operation. Since this should save considerable
energy in the long run, I would think it is something that should be
available.

You're kidding right? If the computer is shut down, how could it possibly
be running the scheduler to launch a wake up program?
Also daily defragmenting is absurd. Monthly is more than enough for most
users.

You can schedule a shutdown because WIndows is running when the scheduler
needs tolaunch the shutdown. But you can't schedule a startup because
Windows isn't running.

You want to defrag daily?

That's way overkill. Defragging monthly is more often than most people need.

Just turn on the computer when you wake up, and run a defrag around once a
month.

I found this in the windowsxp_basics newsgroup. its seems that SBIRCH126's
problem may be your solution?
You may want to have a look in the bios for the wake on RTC that Sharon
mentions.

every weekday at 7 30 am my computer automaticly turns on.I'm pretty sure
it
doesn't do it on sat. or sun.. And I vagly remember entering values in
some
program or other and can't remember which one.Can anyone help me it is
driving me crazy trying to figure what it was I did to make it start up
like
this.I am using windows xp pro and a dell inspiron 8600.

I have no idea what you did. One thing that comes to mind is BIOS settings.
There are often "Wake On" settings: wake on Ring, wake on LAN, and some
systems have a "wake on RTC" (real time clock) or "wake on alarm" setting.
Perhaps you set times in the BIOS menus for a setting of this type?

Thank you for digging up this very useful "problem" in another newsgroup. I
just checked my Dell laptop I use for work and the BIOS has an AUTO ON MODE
and AUTO ON TIME under the Power Management section of the BIOS settings. If
enabled, it claims to be able to wake up the computer at a specific time
every day or only weekdays. This is exactly what I was looking for.

Sorry about the defrag comment. Monthly seems totally appropriate.
