Scheduled Tasks Not Running

Scheduled tasks do not run. This includes McAfee
automatic updates, McAfee virus scan, disk clean-up. I
have scheduled all of these tasks through the Scheduler
Wizard. I believe I have set all options correctly,
including waking the computer to perform these tasks. I
have received the following message: "No mapping between
account names and security IDs was done." I am the only
user of this computer, and I do not use passwords. This
computer is running Windows XP. I have contacted McAfee
support, and they have had me uninstall and reinstall
virusscan several times, with no change. I have been in
contact with Dell customer support, and they told me it
was a problem with the initial factory installation of
Windows XP - and they just installed a new harddrive for
me as a result! Scheduled tasks still not running....

Any suggestions?

PS Is there a way to search Microsoft Newsgroups by
specific issue? I went back pages and pages looking for
this issue, then finally gave up and decided to post this
question. ;-) Thanks for any help.

I have followed the instructions in the Scheduled Task
Wizard, and everything seems correct. The time of my
computer is correct as well. I have configured the
advance properties as I believe they shoud be. The only
thing I have not done is supply a password, since I don't
use a password anywhere else on the computer. And yes, I
was also surprised that Dell sent me a new harddrive,
including on-site installation. But, I wasn't going to
argue with the technician. :-)

Windows 2000 and XP do not require user accounts to create a password during installation, but the Microsoft Task Scheduler requires that users have a password for scheduled events to run. Scheduled scans will not run unless they are configured under a user name that has a password set up. If a scan is not configured with a user name and password, then the scheduled scan will not run
OK
To fix the problem

Restart the computer in Safe mode, and then log on as Administrator
Create a password for each of your Windows user accounts, and then restart the computer in Normal mode
Log on as a user that you want the scheduled task to run for, and then follow these steps to add the new password to the scheduled macafee virus scan in the Windows Task Scheduler. Repeat the steps for each user that you created a password for

Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Scheduled Tasks
Right-click the Macafee task, and then select Properties
Verify that your computer and user name is correctly entered in the "Run as"box. If not, supply the correct information
Click "Set password
Enter the password for the user that was logged in into both windows, and then click OK
Click OK to close the Properties window
Restart the computer

If adding the password does not fix the problem, then delete the Mcaffee task from Windows Task Scheduler, create the scan in Macafee, and then add the correct password in the Windows Task Scheduler scheduled scan entry

Verify that you are logged on as Computer Administrator
Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Scheduled Tasks
Right-click the Norton AntiVirus task, and then click Delete
Close the Windows Task Scheduler
Start Macafe
Click Scan for Viruses
Highlight the scan that you want to schedule
Click Schedule under the section headed Schedule Task
Fill in the Schedule Task, Start time, and Schedule Task Daily fields, and then click OK
Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Scheduled Tasks
Right-click the mcafee task, and then select Properties
Verify that your computer and user name is correctly entered in the "Run as" box. If not, supply the correct information
Click'Set password'..
Enter the password for the user that was logged in into both windows, and then click OK
Click OK to close the Properties window
Restart the computer

I have given you instructions that I used for my Nortons product..It should be close or the same.

Here is a very nice document you can use to test your Task Scedule to see if its working properly

Dear Lar,
I hope you find this because by now it's buried deep
within the pages of this newsgroup. But - I did want to
thank you for taking the time to give me such detailed
instructions. GREATLY appreciated. They were clear and I
will be able to follow them easily. I have just one last
question - by setting a password in order to get the
scheduler to work, will I need to constantly use a
password to use my computer? Will I need a password to
log on for ordinary tasks? As the only user of my
computer, this seems like an annoying step just to get the
scheduler to work........ And - if my only problem has
been that I didn't set a password, why doesn't the
scheduling wizard indicate it can't continue without that
step being completed? A retorical question I needed to
get off my chest......... ;-) When I called Dell tech
support - I was never asked if I had set a password. The
techie merely confirmed that the scheduled tasks have
never run - and sent me a new hard drive! Pretty amazing,
isn't it? I agree about Dell tech support being in India
being a problem, and I have been aware that this has been
the case. Although courteous, the language barrier makes
communication difficult. I can only imagine how difficult
it must be for someone who is totally clueless about
computers!

Thanks again for taking the time to help a stranger. I
will try your fix, just as soon as I hear back about
whether or not setting a password will affect other things
that I do. Enjoy your day.

Windows 2000 and XP do not require user accounts to
create a password during installation, but the Microsoft
Task Scheduler requires that users have a password for
scheduled events to run. Scheduled scans will not run
unless they are configured under a user name that has a
password set up. If a scan is not configured with a user
name and password, then the scheduled scan will not run.
OK?
To fix the problem:

Restart the computer in Safe mode, and then log on as Administrator.
Create a password for each of your Windows user accounts,
and then restart the computer in Normal mode.
Log on as a user that you want the scheduled task to run
for, and then follow these steps to add the new password
to the scheduled macafee virus scan in the Windows Task
Scheduler. Repeat the steps for each user that you created
a password for.
Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories,
point to System Tools, and then click Scheduled Tasks.
Right-click the Macafee task, and then select Properties.
Verify that your computer and user name is correctly
entered in the "Run as"box. If not, supply the correct
information.
Click "Set password"
Enter the password for the user that was logged in into
both windows, and then click OK.
Click OK to close the Properties window.
Restart the computer.

If adding the password does not fix the problem, then
delete the Mcaffee task from Windows Task Scheduler,
create the scan in Macafee, and then add the correct
password in the Windows Task Scheduler scheduled scan
entry.
Verify that you are logged on as Computer Administrator.
Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories,
point to System Tools, and then click Scheduled Tasks.
Right-click the Norton AntiVirus task, and then click Delete.
Close the Windows Task Scheduler.
Start Macafee
Click Scan for Viruses.
Highlight the scan that you want to schedule.
Click Schedule under the section headed Schedule Task.
Fill in the Schedule Task, Start time, and Schedule Task
Daily fields, and then click OK.
Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories,
point to System Tools, and then click Scheduled Tasks.
Right-click the mcafee task, and then select Properties.
Verify that your computer and user name is correctly
entered in the "Run as" box. If not, supply the correct
information.
Click'Set password'...
Enter the password for the user that was logged in into
both windows, and then click OK.

Yes, you would have to use the password each time ...But hey lets try somethings as my sources are telling me just to leave the password field empty if you just log on with your name. Have you tried that? I think you may have by your notes

Also do me a favor and check the symantec document and test the task schedule to see if it is working properly..
Do that first. Lets make sure that it is correctly functioning

Lar

Hello Lar!
I realize this is an awful lot of time to be spending on a
relatively minor problem, but I'm one of those people
absolutely driven crazy by things that don't work.
So....... thank you for supporting my habit! ;-)

I ran the check with the task scheduler, scheduling the
calculator to run at system start. No go. I then found a
scheduler LOG, and found endless error messages, mainly
because McAfee is scheduled to check for updates every 5
minutes while I'm online. Here are the two messages that
keep repeating:

"McAfee.com Update Check (D6K0QS31-Owner).job"
(mcupdate.exe) 3/7/2004 6:22:00 PM ** ERROR **
The attempt to retrieve account information for
the specified task failed; therefore, the task did not
run. Either an error occurred, or no account information
existed for the task.
The specific error is:
0x80070534: No mapping between account names and
security IDs was done.

And for the calculator scheduled:
Calculator.job" (calc.exe) 3/7/2004 6:24:10 PM ** ERROR **
The attempt to log on to the account associated
with the task failed, therefore, the task did not run.
The specific error is:
0x8007052f: Logon failure: user account
restriction. Possible reasons are blank passwords not
allowed, logon hour restrictions, or a policy restriction
has been enforced.
Verify that the task's Run-as name and password
are valid and try again.

So........ being able to read, I do see mention of "no
password". Hmmm.......... perhaps you were right after
all. Okay... I'm willing to test it again, this time
putting in a password, but - if I find it STILL doesn't
work, is there a way to eliminate the need for a password
check every time I log on? Or, once I indicate a password
is required here, will I need a password everywhere?
Thanks muchly, once again.

Jude,

Ditto, Lar is correct, you do need a password to have scheduled tasks run.
However, two questions:

1) If you're the only user of the machine, why would you mind entering a
password once per (however infrequent) boot?
2) Could you keep your XP user account without a password, and set up
another XP user account with password to run the scheduled tasks? AFAIK,
you don't have to be logged on for them to run. At least for the ones where
you don't see the result anyway.

You can download and install TweakUI for XP (power toys) that will log you
on automatically.

Thanks, y'all, for your responses. I hear that I do need
a password for scheduler to work. My objection to having
to use a password to boot the machine is that it just
seemed like one more petty annoyance, and needless with a
one user machine. I like the idea of setting up another
user account, with a password, and then scheduling machine
tasks that way. I'll report back if that works. I assume
I can delete that use account if it still fails to work?
If I DO set up a password with my main account, can I
delete the usage of a password if I decide things are
still not working? Just as soon as I get out from under
the tax returns I'm doing, I'll give it a try. Thanks,
all, for taking the time to read the thread of a
relatively minor problem. :-)

Jude,

Yes, you'll be able to remove a password or delete a user account via:

Start > Control Panel > User Accounts

by clicking on the one you want to change (as long as you have
administrator rights).
