Scheduled Tasks and IE problems

When I installed the new version of Defender and again later when I installed
the newest updates to definitions, I had some strange, but transient error
messages. I could not find them recorded in the Event Viewer. Later in the
day Friday, I discoverd that none of my scheduled tasks had run, includng
Spysweeper and McAfee scans. When I attempted to open McAfee VX options to
check my scheduler, I got an IE message that there was a scripts error on
that page. Earlier in the day, I had begun getting miscellanour error
messages while using IE and Firefox. I don't know what the cause of all this
was, but I uninstalled Defender, McAfee, and Spysweeper - did a major clean
up and maintenacne - and then reinstalled McAfee and Spysweeper. I am not
going to reinstall Defender at the present time. I also ran the McAFee IE
regfix tool, just in case something was messed up during Windows updates. So
far, there are no more error messages and scheduled tasks are OK. I'm
assuming that Defender could be a possible cause, but not necessarily the
only cause. I will wait to see if any of these error occur again before
reinstalling Defender. I am beginning to think that Defender just has too
many hooks in the OS and is a nagging nanny interfering with my software. We
shall see. In the meanwhile, I will visit here frequently to see how things
are developing. Good luck, Ya'll!

Old Rebel,

"And I thought you had it licked" then had to go an "upgrade" didn't you?
You know I never did have any success getting Defender or Spynet to classify
my McAfee scheduled scans. So here I go an upgrade or drink the special
kool-aid "what have I got to lose?" hoping they got me covered. You ready
for this, now everyone of my programs under software explorer is "not yet
classified" everyone!! Doesn't matter if it's a startup program, currently
running program, winsock service etc. Even the core Windows operating system
itself "Not yet Classified" Here comes the punch line!! Windows Defender
itself (drumroll please) "Not yet Classified" Now I ask anyone, how can a
program "not classify" itself?

You probably did the right thing w/ uninstall. Can you continue to resist
the urge with all us squeeling guinea pigs though?

For insurance against letting myself get talked back into installing
Defender, I bought a year license for Ewido Anti-Malware Plus instead. That
cured my withdrawal from Defender REAL quick. I still want to keep up with
its development, because I think the basic concept is a good one, just not
ready for prime time.

What error messages did you see?

Hi, Steve. That's been a while back and none of the error messages were in
the event viewer, or I would have copied them. During Defender and
definitions install there was some kind of error about something not being
found. With McAfee and IE is was scripting errors. Firefox was giving me
messages that SSL was messed up. I hate to be so vague, but all of the errors
are gone now since I uninstalled those programs. I will not re-install
Defender any time in the near future. Since it has been gone, both McAfee and
Spysweeper's scheduled scans and autoupdaters have been working correctly for
the first time in months. I never had any prompts from Defender to
allow/block these items, but I just intuit that Defender contributed to the
problem. If I knew more about how Windows works, I could probably explain it
better. There may be another explanation, and if so, I would like to know. But
right now all is OK so I will leave well enough alone.
