?I downloaded Defender 2, after uninstalling Microsoft Giant Anti-spyware
because it stalled on 25791 files scanned continually. My only comment with
Defender 2 is it puts itself in XP's Scheduled Tasks folder uninvited even
although in Options you are able to schedule it to run at a time that suits
you. I am unable to delete it in scheduled tasks. Could someone comment on
this please, has it happened to them?

This is the first report of this sort I've seen, and it is unexpected--I'm
unaware of Windows Defender using Scheduled tasks on its own.

Can you describe the scheduled task in more detail?

If this task were related to Windows Defender, I would expect it to have the
following executable:

\program files\windows defender\mpcmdrun.exe

Bill, thanks for your prompt answer. I run Windows XP/SP2 I am referring to
the Scheduled Tasks in start/settings/control panel/scheduled tasks. HOWEVER
since posting my first post, I went back in and having right clicked earlier
and clicking delete I got a dialog box to say "cannot delete this file", but
now it is gone, so I got my way in the end. On download, Defender 2 did use
Scheduled Tasks on its own, which you are interested in I would assume.

Another thread has let me know that the scheduled task is hidden--I'd
forgotten that there are such--so this explains several things to me, and I
now know that it is used natively--which is excellent news!

It also explains some instances of no scheduled scan--some folks have turned
the scheduled tasks mechanism off, thinking they had no use for it.

Since the scan is happening in the background, with no visible UI, it is
possible for it to be running while you are trying to do the folder
deletion--might that be what happened?

Could be. As I mentioned I scheduled Defender 2 for 6pm - Nothing happened
so I opened the program, and low and behold it was doing its job unnoticed in
the background, My comment is it should open on the desktop when scanning,
and there should be an icon in Quick Launch. I have put a shortcut in my
taskbar so I can go to it with one click. We are pretting modern downunder
Bill, the internet is the same everywhere!!!!!!!!!

What may be of interest is that according to one report today, a missed
scheduled scan (i.e. a scan which is triggered at next boot because the
scheduled time has been missed--DID have an icon in the notification area.

So--apparently this is possible, and perhaps there's a bug involved.
