Does anyone have any thoughts on the necessity of ordering the DVD/CD media
should recovery be necessary? Also, what are the costs involved for the
upgrade
to be mailed? Can I burn the download to my own DVD?

Right now I plan to download on broadband, but I think that I
should eventually have a media backup available for an upgrade of this
size.
Does that even make sense to do?

You can download (eventually) the "network" version of SP3--it will be
large--hundreds of megabytes, but it will contain all the code needed for
any hardware (32 bit, anyway).

What you really would like to have is an XP install CD with SP3 integrated
into it. This is possible, as well, but not with any supported Microsoft
tools, I think. You have to roll your own.

when sp2 came out you could order a cd with just it on it
I am wondering why Microsoft will not have this for sp3?

I've not spotted a clear answer to this--some of the language at some sites
seems to say that there will be releases of the SP on disk media, but it
isn't clear to me.

FWIW, when I last ordered a Vista OEM version, there was an SP1 CD offered
for $5, with a "deal" where getting both together gave a rebate of $5!

In other words--if you were buying Visa OEM media without SP1, you could get
SP1 media to go with it for free, and I did.

It would make it a lot easier on the dial-up users if Microsoft would offer
SP3 on CD. I think most of use that are still on dial-up would be willing to
pay for it instead of having to go through a large download.

One possible explanation - when SP2 came out a lot less people had
broadband connections. Now the 'norm' is download, not post.

you would be surprised how many people are still on dialup.
For microsoft, this is no excuse

If you get the file via AU, the number of bits will be far smaller--I'm not
sure of my figures, I may be confusing Vista SP1 with XP SP3, but think 64
megs rather than 300. That still isn't small potatoes for dialup, but, if
you get it via AU, it will use inactive time on the connection while you are
web browsing, or reading the email you downloaded, and it can be interrupted
and restarted without penalty--so--it should just happen in the background
and at some point you will be notified that it is downloaded and ready to
install.

I'm not discounting the value of a CD option--just saying that AU is better
than many give it credit for--a whole lot of machines are getting patched
via AU without much effort on the part of their owners. The last Microsoft
Security Intelligence Report says that 420 million machines are running the
Malicious Software Removal tool on a monthly basis in recent months. I'm
not sure how the world is divided between broadband and dialup users, but
there must be a fair number of dialup users in that statistic.

I am quite sure that the update will be available on CD/DVD. The
download size is 316MB, and that will take a while, even on broadband.

Thanks for the info, glad to hear that Microsoft is going to offer a XP SP3 CD.

Thanks for the info on the AU megs for SP3.

I will probably go ahead and let AU download SP3, but I still want to order
the CD also. The CD would come in handy if I ever had to reformat. It would
take forever to download all the updates on dial-up again.

Agreed. If your original XP is gold, be sure that you have an SP1 CD as
well.

Although SP's are cumulative, and Microsoft says all previous fixes are
included in SP3, SP3 will not allow installation over an XP gold--i.e. the
original version--which is beyond its support life.

I believe the download for SP3 is about 66megs, and I think when someone pays
over 300 dollars for XP Pro, a free update Cd is in order. I also have dial
up, and I don't want to tie up my phone lines for that period of time, but I
also want my computer to be as up to date as possible. As for the mailciouse
software removal, I doubt that many with dial up are downloading this
software, as they too are large files and time consuming. We all know about
all of the security for our computers, and I myself run three different ones.
I don't worry about malicious software removal.

Check other messages today--notably from Robin--this CD is available, and it
is (nearly) free--there's a small shipping and handling fee.
