Dad

Bot used Plustek 4831P, downloaded Driver and Twain (??) & manual.
Scans OK ... but NO picture/data on screen ... may be that Twain or pic
portion did not install (still zipped ???). I tried Copy mode (not Fax).

I see "Action Manager 32" in C:\ Windows\Start menu\Programs
( repeated this plus Scan Light on desk-top-folder ) ... but I do NOT
see the unzipped: _inst32i.ex_ , nor TWAIN.z(ip), nor winsys.z(ip)
all of which are on Disk A: but do not show when search of drive C:

Assuming the A: disks (2) have the imaging files to do the screen thing:
What method do I use to use those 3 (?) files and WHERE should
they be placed so the scanner can find them ? (I have Win Zip ok).

This may be a general , or typical scan problem. Dad (Win 98)
(Good scan ... no picture on screen!)

Download page for 4831P scanner. Driver and User Guide. (get both).
Does not support Windows XP.
http://www.plustek.com/download/4831p.htm

If you do not have Winzip. http://winzip.com/ You can use the evaluation
version for a limited time.

The downloaded file is p300.zip when you unzip into a folder of your choice,
use folder names. You get two Folders, Disk1(13 files) and Disk2 (4 files).
Open the folder Disk1 with Windows Explorer and there will be 13 files, one
which is Setup.exe, Double click (run) this file to start the installation
of the driver.

Setup will place all of the correct files in the correct place. Reboot the
computer after Setup completes.

You start a Photo Editor and Select TWAIN then Acquire image.

If you do not have a photo editor use the free Irfanview with plug-ins.
http://www.irfanview.com/
Irfanview has a TWAIN interface for scanners.

Did everything you said down to INCLUDING your sentence below:
"Setup will place all of the correct files in the correct place.
Reboot the computer after Setup completes."

Following NOT done !!!
"You start a Photo Editor and Select TWAIN then Acquire image."

This is where I get confused (I have irfanview, can get plugs)
.... but
what are the TWAIN files on disk 1 ... and how do I actually
call for the display after the scan,
(How/where do I do Acquire ??? )

(What are the still zipped TWAIN.z files on disk 1 drive A:
but not in C/ computer ???) (What is Winsys.z on same disk ???)
Like it's supposed to work with files on the two Disks 1 & 2.

"If you do not have a photo editor use the free Irfanview with
plug-ins.
http://www.irfanview.com/Irfanview has a TWAIN interface for
scanners."

Just need a little more on the actual steps (after the scan
stops),
What am I to do ??? (click Irfanview ?) Dad
Thanks for your diligent follow-thru !

Sorry, I should have looked at my Irfanview (under File) ...
I (now) see it does have Select TWAIN Source and, Acquire.

Perhaps that is alI I need: if it knows where to go to Acquire
the Scan. (Oh, ME of little faith ... as I had disconnected the
scanner, and moved it into storage). Will try again! Dad

After the TWAIN driver (the downloaded file) is installed (Setup is run),
connect the scanner and turn on the scanner (power on). DO NOT connect the
scanner until the TWAIN driver is installed (Setup run and completed).

The downloaded files are the TWAIN driver, Setup installs the files mostly
in C:\Windows\Twain_32\Scanner_name. It also puts information into the
registery for windows. I think Disk 2 has some progams, Setup should ask for
Disk2 when run, Browse to the location of DISK2 and continue the install.
( I must tell you I do not have the scanner, so I will not finish the
install on my computer. I do not know exactly what this download installs,
except for the TWAIN). Maybe the Scanner Utility. Page 12 of document, Page
20 in pdf.

Read Testing the Scanner in the Scanner.pdf starting on document page 11,
page 18 in the pdf.

(Irfanview version 3.97) You must get the plug-ins, Irfanview is not much
without them, many functions do not work without the plug-ins.

Irfanview is a simple photo editor and an image viewer, the File>Select
Twain source will bring up a window that will list the TWAIN drivers that
are installed on the computer. You must select the driver by clicking on the
name in the box then click Select. If nothing appears in the Select source
box, there is not a TWAIN driver installed on the system.

After the Select TWAIN source then click File>Acquire/Batch scanning, dot in
Single image show acquired image in viewer, click OK. The Twain interface
for the scanner should come on screen, there is the setting for the various
scanning modes. To save the image in the viewer, File>Save As. Pick your
File type (JPG is the most popular) then folder and filename in the dialog
window, click Save.

Read the Scanning Guide that you also downloaded for instructions on using
the TWAIN interface. Unzip 4831guide.zip, you get Scanner.pdf, you need
Acrobat Reader (free) http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
to read the Scanner.pdf, Download the Full version of Reader, you do not
need to Download the Adobe Yahoo! Toolbar (you can if you wish). For faster
downloads, check Do not use Adobe Download Manager, If you have a good error
free connection to the internet.

Read Scanning Using TWAIN, it starts on Page 16 of the document which is
page 24 in the PDF.

Good luck!
If after the software is correctly installed and you do not get an image,
you could have a defective scanner. See if the scanning light in the scanner
is lit. Don't forget to put a picture or magazine on the glass and close the
door.

Thank you, CSM1 ... I should be able to take it from there ... even though
I am > 80 years. Appreciate your dilligence on this. Thanks! Dad
