SCANS - Now here's a thing!

My friend has scans set for 8am. He powered up at 11.45am and at 12.10 WD
launched itself into a Quick Scan AND had a system tray icon to say "Scan in
Progress". Why? No-one else gets an icon when they are scanning do they?

(It then came up with the same request to Review Detected Changes (see my
previous posting).

I tried to scan to see if an icon pops up and it does not - however that was
a manual scan - maybe it does it for scheduled scans.

So I set one up and when it started it did not put an icon in the systray.

SO to confirm I do not get an icon during a quick scan.

This is new with Windows Defender. If the scheduled scan is missed, it is
initiated on the next boot cycle. My guess is that the delay from 11:45 to
12:10 was involved with a signature check via bits--that can take a bit of
time.

I'm not sure how it manages to coordinate the icon with the scan--there must
be a switch to do that. I do know that if I run a background scan--via the
command prompt, and then open the UI (run Windows Defender from the start
menu)--I see the files being scanned.

You can see the parameters used for a scheduled scan by opening the task
scheduler and going to advanced and showing hidden tasks.

However, I don't think this answers the question--this scan is
initiated--perhaps by the Windows Defender Service. It may be that this
ability to show the icon is something not available to mere mortal users <g>

We waited and waited this morning but no scan was run to make up for the
missed one. There is nowhere in the scheduler that allows a tick for
running the missed scan as there is with Virus Scan.

In relation to the little icon in the taskbar when the unexpected scan was
running, when we maximised it we could see the quick scan running, as you
described. It was very strange why it was there in the first place.

Here's something else!

I looked in the Help under View progress of a Windows Defender Scan and it says:

Note

a.. If a scan is in progress, you can also click the Windows Defender icon in the notification area to view the status of the scan.
b.. To view when your computer was last scanned for spyware and other potentially unwanted software, check the Status area on the Windows Defender Home page.
This must mean that MS intend we shall have an icon for that - sometime. It just hasn't appeared yet. Must go and read further!

What--you actually read the help file--good for you! That's interesting--you might be right. Hope so.
