Scans not running at time I set and just running randomly

Automatic scans seem to just kick in on my system whenever they feel like it.
I have the automatic scan set to midnight, but I often my the Windows
Defender process thrashing the disk and using lots of CPU, and when I check
the UI, sure enough it is doing a scan.... why is it doing a scan I have not
told it to do?

Ummm.... been thinking on this too Bill and will try the daily quick scan
schedule you speak of at say, 4am.
Haven't yet been 'chatted up' by Defender as a result of a finding in either
full or quick scan mode; that said, if there should be a problem after the
4am quick scan, are you able to indicate how we might expect Defender to
notify us of this (just to ease my paranoia) so that we will then know it's
time to initiate the required full scan.
And, I see you have earned a MVP status--congratulations!

I've been an MVP for some years, I s'pose I should put it in my sig....

It shows here when I post via HTML, and doesn't when I post via NNTP, which
is my preference--I can get a lot more work done that way in the same time.

My preference for scheduled scans, is to uncheck the box it tools, general
settings, Automatic Scanning section, which reads "Apply actions on detected
items after scanning."

This means that next morning, I'm greeted by the icon--I think with a red
question mark??--and when I open up Defender I get a scan results window and
am asked to make disposition choices about whats found. This allows me to
research each item for possible false-positives, etc, and choose quarantine,
or ignore, if in doubt.

Quckscan times vary--I've office machines where they take less than two
minutes, and I think on my home machine it is more like half an hour. It is
also far less resource intensive than a full scan--I've had no complaints
from office users where it is running during the day.

Yep!

It is still a Beta and, a little research (now that you mention it) seems
prudent to me too.
Never occurred to me to uncheck that box & scope for false
positives---thanks for that!

The brown stuff has usually hit the rotating metal by the time we get here,
Bill; for most of us, an MVP signature would be very reassuring about then,
so, yeah, if it's not too much bother, adding the sig. does seem likely to be
helpful.

There have been false positives throughout the beta--and I see no reason to
think they will end with the beta status. McAfee had a similar problem
recently with a released product--it's happened to every vendor with a
malware scanner, I suspect.

I uncheck that box on servers, and on my own workstation. I don't do it on
the average client machine---I don't expect the average office user to know
enough to do the research--it'd just result in more calls for support to me.
As it is, I get nearly zero mention of either Microsoft Antispyware or
Windows Defender--they both just work, for most users.
