How do you scan in xp home edition if you are using a hp 4315
all-in-one?

This is not a Windows issue. The instructions for using your scanner should
have come with your scanner. If you don't have them, contact HP, or check on
their web site.

As Ken said "The instructions for using your scanner should
have come with your scanner".

Read those instructions carefully as most "All in one" or Scanners/fax
hardware require that the software is installed first and then you connect
the All-in-one printer, if you connect the printer/scanner first then
installed the software you may not be able to use all the functionality,
most likely the scanner/fax functions.

I'm actually trying to help my father. I just had him uninstall his HP
Officejet software and reinstalled it. I had him connect his all-in-one when
the installtion disc prompted him to do so. He had an errand to run and I
told him to pick up a new USB cord while he was out. If that doesn't work,
I'm thinking he has a hardware problem with the printer. The doc feeds and
appears to be scanning, but the message is the document could not be scanned.
Do you think I'm "on the right track"?

No. Windows is communicating, so there's no problem with the USB cord.
Make sure he removed or slid the lock so the scanner can slide freely.

By following the instructions in the manual that came with the scanner.
