how can i turn off the scanning of the "a" drive when
there is no disk in there. it is really annoying when i
go to open a file!

I find that that happens ONLY when the last drive accessed from Word was the
A: drive. Under NO circumstances should you EVER open or save a file from
Word directly from/to the A: drive.

Yes. Word will happily comply when you try to use A:. And, if you're lucky,
the file won't get corrupted. However, tens of thousands of Word users have
learned the hard way that working directly on a floppy from Word should be
done only on files you don't mind losing/corrupting. (Reason: Word likes to
create zillions of temporary files in the location of the file being edited.
Often, these files greatly exceed the size of the original file, as well as
the capacity of a floppy. When this happens, or if the floppy is removed
before the file is "officially" closed by Word, any open documents on that
floppy get corrupted.)

I.e., if you never tell Word to look at the A: drive (that's what Windows
Explorer is for), you shouldn't have a problem with Word scanning the A:
drive.
