Scanning Slides: Media set to Image or Slilde Film?

Ed:

I'm using Vuescan 8 with my Canon FS4000US.

Per your past suggestion, I get better Ektachrome scans when Input/Media is
set to "Image" rather than to "Slide Film." This has also been true with
previous versions of the program. Even with these settings, my images are a
bit flat looking.

Wasn't this going to be changed at some point?

The somewhat dull look comes from the wide range of densities captured.

A "curves" type of control is being developed, but you can also do that in a
photo editor with a curves type of control.
