Scanning slides ... a question.

Has anyone done scanning of slides with a standard scanner (I'm using a
HP 3500c scanner)? At the moment I'm using an inverted light box and
am getting some very good results. Is there another method that I could
try?

I know there are some after market devices out there but they are pretty
expensive - I'm looking for a more inexpensive ... more creative route
as long as it produces excellent results.

It is not the correct way to scan slides, but I have had good results by
putting a white (blank) sheet of paper on top to the slides and scanning in
the regular reflective mode. It works for 4" X 5" transparencies.

This may not work if the slide is real dense.
