I have a Lexmark X75 and have tried scanning with infrequent success. All I
want to do is scan information (usually just in text format -- I seem to
have no problems with pictures) into my Word program so that I can then
maneuver it. Sometimes I am successful and sometimes I'm not. I can't
figure out why. At one time I had the info going into winword.exe but this
morning I tried it and the program couldn't open the file. Obviously I'm
missing a step or two.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Lynn

Hi Lynn. It is not so clear what you want or what you have, but by
"so I can maneuver it", my guess is that you may mean that you want editable
text characters from your scanned image, so you can change that text in
Word. That will require use of OCR software. I dont know what you have,
and it is not impossible that it is built into your scanning software, but
otherwise, often one starts OCR software directly from the Windows Start
menu, and it does the scanning.

By "going into Word", I think you may mean the problem is that you want the
scanned results to go directly to Word. Your scanner manual is online, and
while it doesnt show much, Page 7 does say that the "Show More Scan
Settings" button will allow you to choose how the scan will be used (which
could include OCR for editable text?), and it says you can choose a program
to send the image to. Under Creative Tasks (same page 7), it mentions Edit
text using OCR, but doesnt give details, unless it is in the Show More
Settings area.

It does say "For more info, click Help button at top right corner. I would
guess this is where the actual operating instructions may be.

To convert scanned documents into editable text requires a program called
OCR
(Optical Character Recognition).
Sometimes there is a basic OCR program included with the scanner software.

Better programs do a much better job.

ABBYY FineReader

or
OmniPage Pro 14

Best price for OmniPage Pro 14 is found at:

Lynn,
From the main page of the Lexmark All-In-One you need to go down to
the "Productivity" area. Click on the OCR option and then select
Microsoft Word.

This will send it through Abby.

If you want better results then you need to buy an OCR program.

http://www.scanhelp.com sells TypeReader, which is pretty good.
