I have a Canoscan 4400f. It seems to me that there is no preview in
the software when scanning to PDF and no way to crop your page before
the scan. Has anyone found a way to overcome this?

Don't use the button on the scanner.
Instead scan manually and then create the PDF.

Open the Canoscan Toolbox. Click on PDF, In the PDF window, Check the box
Display the Scanner Driver. (Below the scanner settings) When the check box
is checked the scanner settings are grayed out.

Works for me, I got the scanner driver, did a preview, set the scan area
then clicked Scan.
My scanner is the Canoscan 8400F.

If by chance you are using a Mac computer, then you will not be able
to display the scanner driver when using the PDF function and
therefore you will not be able to preview and crop before hand. The
alternative would be to obtain Acrobat Professional and scan directly
in to the application.
