Scanning NAS Box?

I recently retired my Windows Home Server box in favor of a NAS.

Has the Server version of Avast running on the WSH machine.

But what to do about scanning the NAS?

Or is that moot bc the anti virus apps on connected PCs will
catch anything that's retrieved from/saved to the NAS?

Can you map a drive to the networked drive?

Yes - and my freebie version of Avast will explicitly scan it if
I take the trouble to point it there and pull the trigger.

I guess that's most of my answer: do it every so often, and let
the client PC's virus checkers take care of stuff that gets moved
to/from.

I don't have Avast installed anymore. It doesn't have an option to
define your own scan and then schedule it? How about the standard scan
setups? Can you add drives to those or included network drives?

Pete:

If this is an appliance with a closed OS (i.e, runs from ROM) then mapping a share and
scanning the share is just about all you can do.

On mine it is moot. The OS (Linux in this case) cannot be permanently
altered by malware. It can be set up for access through the internet,
but it isn't.

If *all* data and programs that can get to your NAS go through your PCs,
I don't think that there is much need for even file scanning your NAS
over your network.

A dedicated firewall would be good though.
