Scanning hard copies and using MS. Word?

Is there anyway of scanning hard copies where they can be manipulated using MS. Word. We have hundreds of lesson plans that we are in the process of changing from hard copies to our computer system where they can be updated as needed. At the present we are tying all of them and it is going to take at least a year.

Scans are just images, so you need software that extracts the text and other
images to produce an editable document. The precise formatting may be lost
in the conversion process but the software gets better every year.

Office XP and 2003 include the Microsoft Office Document Scanning/Imaging
tool which does that. although most scanners come with OCR (optical
character recognition) software. See, for example,
